Young Adulting is an online magazine that celebrates, engages with, and reviews contemporary literature for young adults (YA), middle-grade (MG), new adults (NA), and—most recently—picture books.
Based out of the Creative Writing Program at the University of British Columbia (UBC), Young Adulting is a forum for critical engagement with contemporary anglophone books for young readers. In a changing publishing climate, YA is one of the only consistently growing literary sectors and the source for countless film, television, and game adaptations. These novels are complex, respond to social change, represent the diversity of their readers, and cross a broad swath of sub-genres from contemporary realism to urban fantasy to historical fiction.
Established in Spring 2019, we post student written reviews bi-weekly (Young Adult or Middle Grade reviews on Tuesday and Picture Book reviews on Thursdays). While we have started small, we hope to develop into a platform where authors and scholars can add their voices to the conversation alongside reviewers and scholars of this literature.
